Storage

Bathroom storage – surely there’s no space?

The smallest room in the house is probably the last place you would consider to be a storage paradise but the clutter found in many bathrooms stands witness to the fact that we don’t generally provide ourselves with nearly enough storage for the vast range of personal hygiene stuff we use.

Most bathrooms just about stretch to a medicine cabinet and a linen basket but when you consider the products used in a normal family bathroom on a regular basis it’s not surprising this is not nearly enough storage.  This list is by no means exhaustive:Personal cleaning stuff – soaps, shampoos, cleansers, facial scrubs, face masks, toner, bath foam, baby oil, deodorant, foot spray, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, razors, shaving cream, brushes, combs, loofah, pumice stone, sponges Luxuries – candles, incense burners, candle-holdersKids Stuff – Plastic ducks, battleships, submarines, goggles, snorkelCosmetics – Perfume, after-shave, moisturizer, foundation, eyeliner, lipsticks, blusher, hair spray, nail polish, polish remover, hair dyes,Personal hygiene – toilet paper, flannels, towels, nail clippers, scissors, hand wipesToilet products – disinfectant, ceramic cleaner, glass cleaner, anticalc, toilet deodorizer, floor mop, cloths, sponges, toilet brush, sink plungerMedical products – eye drops, ear spray, pain killers, cough medicine, lotions, band aids, antiseptic creams, bandages, cotton wool Most of this ends up crammed into the only storage cupboard in the room or lies on a series of shelves collecting dust when a little thought could make your bathroom a clutter-free feng shui haven of peace.Consider just how much dead space there is in a bathroom.  Most boxed-in baths could easily have a concealed door to provide access to the narrow gap inside.  This is an ideal storage place for all those cleaning materials especially if you engineer a child-proof lock to deter sticky tiny fingers.Similarly, behind the toilet and under the sink there are spaces that will never be used to walk on and which can be converted into stylish storage space with a little imagination. Most bathroom furniture suppliers have identified that there always seems to be either a tall narrow gap or a short shallow space in most bathrooms that ends up as a dumping ground.  So they have designed classy storage units with frosted glass doors for just these nooks and crannies.  You’ll even find storage cupboards with a cutout for the sink waste that are ready to slide into place.  Suddenly the smallest room looks a lot bigger.
